For IMD Scientific Assistant, candidates must attempt one technical subject according to their educational qualification and stream.
The available choices are:
Part-D
Computer Science and Information Technology
Part-E
Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering
Part-F
Physics
Candidates have to select their applicable technical subject while filling the online application form.
Can IMD Candidates Attempt Any Technical Subject?
No.
Candidates applying for Scientific Assistant IMD are required to opt for one of the three subjects according to their stream/branch and educational qualification.
You cannot simply choose Physics because you find Physics easier.
Similarly, a Physics candidate cannot randomly select Computer Science.
The subject selected in the application form will be used for both:
Paper 1
and
Paper 2
Important: Technical Subject Cannot Be Changed Later
SSC has specifically stated that the subject/stream selected while filling the application form will not be changed under any circumstances.
This is a very important point.
Before selecting:
• Part-D
• Part-E
• Part-F
make sure your selection matches your educational qualification.
A wrong selection can create problems later during the recruitment process.
Is IMD Scientific Assistant Paper 1 Qualifying?
Yes.
Paper 1 is qualifying in nature.
However, students should not misunderstand the word “qualifying.”
You still need a sufficiently high score because candidates will be shortlisted for Paper 2 on the basis of their normalized Paper 1 marks.
So simply crossing the minimum qualifying percentage does not guarantee that you will reach Paper 2.
According to Satyendra Sir, this is one of the biggest mistakes students can make:
“Qualifying paper does not mean an unimportant paper. You first have to clear the competition in Paper 1 to reach Paper 2.”
Minimum Qualifying Marks in Paper 1
SSC has prescribed the following minimum qualifying marks:
|
Category |
Minimum Qualifying Marks |
|
UR |
30% |
|
OBC / EWS |
25% |
|
Other Categories |
20% |
The same minimum qualifying standards also apply to Paper 2.
IMD Scientific Assistant Paper 1 Negative Marking
There is negative marking in Paper 1.
For every wrong answer:
0.25 mark will be deducted.
This means random guessing can reduce your score.
A candidate should focus on:
• accuracy
• elimination technique
• controlled attempts
• avoiding blind guesses
This becomes especially important when Paper 1 scores are being used to shortlist candidates for Paper 2.
IMD Scientific Assistant Paper 2 Exam Pattern 2026
Candidates shortlisted through Paper 1 will appear in Paper 2.

Physics Candidates
Part-F: Physics
Computer Science / IT Candidates
Part-D: Computer Science and Information Technology
Electronics / Telecommunication Candidates
Part-E: Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering
There is no General Awareness or Reasoning section in Paper 2 for IMD Scientific Assistant.
Paper 2 is focused on the relevant technical subject.
IMD Scientific Assistant Paper 2 Negative Marking
Paper 2 has a considerably heavier penalty for incorrect answers.
Every incorrect answer:
1 mark will be deducted.
Therefore, accuracy becomes even more important in Paper 2.
Students should not approach a 300-mark Paper 2 with an aggressive guessing strategy.
At Career Wave, the preparation approach should be:
Concept → PYQ → Practice → Accuracy → Mock Analysis
rather than simply increasing attempts.

Merit Deciding |
Which Paper Decides Final Selection?
This is probably the most important point of the entire examination pattern.
Final selection for Scientific Assistant IMD will be based on Paper 2.
For final selection, SSC will consider the normalized marks obtained in the candidate's applicable technical paper:
• Part-D
• Part-E
• or Part-F
depending on the selected stream.
Paper 1 marks are used to shortlist candidates for Paper 2, but Paper 1 marks are not used to determine the final merit list.
IMD Scientific Assistant Normalization 2026
Normalization is another important feature of this recruitment.
SSC has stated that if an examination is conducted in multiple shifts, marks will be normalized.
For IMD Scientific Assistant specifically, marks obtained in:
• Part-D
• Part-E
• Part-F
can also be normalized by treating these technical papers as different shifts.
Therefore, candidates from Physics, Computer Science and Electronics streams will ultimately compete through the normalization process prescribed by SSC.
Will Physics, CS and Electronics Have Separate Merit Lists?
SSC will prepare a separate merit list for Scientific Assistant IMD for shortlisting candidates to Paper 2.
For final selection to IMD, normalized marks from the applicable Part-D, Part-E or Part-F Paper 2 examination will be considered.
Candidates should therefore focus on maximizing performance in their own prescribed technical stream rather than comparing raw scores directly across different technical subjects.
Language of IMD Scientific Assistant Exam
Paper 1 and Paper 2 questions will be set in:
•Hindi
•English
Candidates should still become comfortable with technical terminology in English because many Physics, Electronics and Computer Science terms are commonly presented in standard technical language.
Scientific Calculator Allowed in IMD Exam 2026?
There is an important change in SSC JE 2026.
A scientific calculator will be available on the computer screen throughout the examination.
The calculator will appear through a calculator icon on the candidate's screen.
However:
Physical calculators will not be allowed inside the examination lab.
For Physics candidates, this can be particularly useful in numerical calculations.
IMD Scientific Assistant Physics Paper Level
The notification states that the standard of Physics questions will be approximately at the Graduation Level.
This is important.
The Physics paper should therefore not be prepared only at Class 11–12 level.
The official syllabus includes areas such as:
• Mathematical Methods
• Mechanics
• General Properties of Matter
• Oscillations
• Waves
• Optics
• Electricity
• Magnetism
• Kinetic Theory
• Thermodynamics
• Modern Physics
• Solid State Physics
• Semiconductor Devices
• Analog Electronics
• Digital Electronics
How Should Physics Candidates Prepare?
According to Satyendra Sir, Physics candidates should prepare Paper 1 and Paper 2 together.
There is no benefit in thinking:
“I will prepare only enough Physics to qualify Paper 1 and start serious preparation after Paper 1.”
The same Physics syllabus becomes extremely important in Paper 2, where final merit is decided.
A better approach is:
Phase 1 – Complete Concepts
Build chapter-wise fundamentals.
Phase 2 – Formula Revision
Maintain a compact formula revision sheet.
Phase 3 – PYQs
Solve previous relevant Physics examination questions.
Phase 4 – Topic Tests
Test individual chapters.
Phase 5 – Mixed Practice
Combine multiple chapters.
Phase 6 – Full-Length Mocks
Prepare according to the actual examination conditions.
Paper 1 Strategy by Career Wave
Candidates should divide preparation into three blocks:
Reasoning – 50 Marks
Target high accuracy because reasoning can become a scoring section.
General Awareness – 50 Marks
Prepare static GS together with relevant current affairs.
Technical – 100 Marks
This should remain the strongest component of your Paper 1 preparation.
For Physics students studying with Career Wave and Satyendra Sir, technical preparation should start from the official IMD syllabus rather than depending on random chapter lists.
Paper 2 Strategy by Career Wave
Paper 2 is where selection will ultimately be decided.
The focus should therefore be:
• Conceptual clarity
• Formula retention
• Numerical accuracy
• Question selection
• PYQ analysis
• Time management
• Mock-test analysis
With 100 questions carrying 300 marks and 1-mark negative marking, every unnecessary mistake can have a meaningful effect on rank.
Biggest Mistake Students Should Avoid
Do not prepare Paper 1 and Paper 2 as two completely separate examinations.
Your technical preparation is common.
If you build your technical subject strongly from the beginning, you are simultaneously preparing for:
Paper 1 shortlisting + Paper 2 final selection.
This is particularly important for Physics candidates.
Final Summary
