On the contrary, the total number of students who appeared for the IOQM 2025-26 session has not been officially declared by MTA(I). However, unofficial data says over 1 lakh students appeared for IOQM 2025-26.

IOQM stands for Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics. This exam was introduced very recently in 2020 to represent India at the world's most prestigious mathematics competition. IOQM is the first stage of India's Mathematical Olympiad programme. It is a national-level mathematics examination designed to identify students with exceptional mathematical reasoning and problem-solving abilities. IOQM evaluates your creative and logical problem-solving skills in unfamiliar mathematical problems. The examination is conducted by the Mathematics Teachers' Association (India) [MTA(I)] and the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), which coordinates India's participation in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).
Before 2020, students had to clear two separate stages: Pre-Regional Mathematical Olympiad (Pre-RMO) & Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO). To simplify the selection process, HBCSE & MTA(I) decided to merge these two exams into a single stage called IOQM. As a result, students now have a uniform selection criterion across India and a simpler registration process.

IOQM is the polar opposite of school mathematics. Even though HBCSE’s official syllabus guidance states that NCERT Maths of Classes 8, 9, & 10 are the major focus areas, IOQM doesn’t test rote memorisation of formulas, rather deep conceptual understanding and creative problem-solving. The official IOQM syllabus revolves around four major pillars of Mathematics, i.e., Algebra, Combinatorics, Geometry, and Number Theory.

Knowing the ins and outs of the IOQM exam pattern is equally important. As per HBCSE guidelines, the IOQM exam consists of 30 questions that need to be answered within three hours. Each answer is either a single-digit or a two-digit integer that needs to be marked on an OMR sheet. The IOQM question paper is available both in English and Hindi.
