NSEJS stands for National Standard Examination in Junior Science. Conducted by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT), this examination is open only to Class 8, 9, and 10 students. It is a national-level examination designed to identify and nurture students with strong aptitude skills and interest in science (Physics, Chemistry, & Biology) at the junior level.
NSEJS → INJSO (Indian National Junior Science Olympiad) → OCSC (Orientation-Cum-Selection Camp → Pre-Departure Training Camp (PDT) → International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO).

NSEJS demands conceptual understanding from students instead of memorising blindly. Unlike school exams, the NSEJS exam presents questions that combine multiple concepts or unfamiliar situations, which require in-depth analytical thinking & fundamental understanding.
For example, A school-level question might ask: “What is the formula for density?”, but in NSEJS, you might be asked: “A wooden block floats in water with 60% of its volume submerged. The same block is now placed in a liquid whose density is half that of water. What fraction of the block's volume will be submerged?”
As you can see, to solve this, you can not just memorise the formula for density. You need to understand the principle of flotation, find out that the weight of the displaced liquid must equal the weight of the block, and understand how the fraction of submerged volume changes with the density of the liquid.
Similarly, preparing for NSEJS also develops your problem-solving skills. While school exams ask whether you remember a concept, NSEJS tests whether you can apply that conceptual knowledge in an unfamiliar situation.
For example, in school you might be asked: “A wire has a resistance of 10 Ω and a current of 2 A flows through it. Calculate the potential difference across the wire.” - this just requires you to remember Ohm’s law. Whereas the NSEJS question paper may ask: “Two identical bulbs are connected to a battery. In Arrangement A, the bulbs are connected in series. In Arrangement B, they are connected in parallel. Without calculating the exact current, determine in which arrangement each bulb will glow brighter and explain why.” - this requires understanding the relationship between voltage, current, and resistance; remember how current behaves in series and parallel circuits and apply the relationship P = V²/R to reason about the brightness.
