Whenever students hear the name of the NSEC Exam, they feel confused about how to prepare for NSEC, where to start, and when to start. As the historical stats show, every year over 1 lakh students appear for the exam, and only about the top 1% of students make it to the next stage, the Indian National Chemistry Olympiad (INChO). Therefore, it’s not possible to crack NSEC without a proper NSEC preparation plan & strategies. Before we jump into the NSEC preparation plan, it’s important first to understand the syllabus & the question paper pattern to get a general idea of exactly what the exam demands from you.
As per IAPT guidelines, the syllabus for this exam has been set to broadly match the Class 11 & Class CBSE topics. Topics like Thermodynamics, Equilibrium, Hydrocarbons, Organic Chemistry Principles, Solutions, Electrochemistry, and Coordination Compounds take up most of the syllabus. However, even though the syllabus is up to Class 12 level, the depth goes beyond standard school examinations. A structured preparation plan for NSEC should be divided into three segments: building foundations, practising Olympiad problems, & strengthening your concepts through PYQs & Mock tests. So, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to prepare for NSEC in 6 months:
Since NSEC demands conceptual clarity, start by studying the Class 11 & Class 12 Chemistry NCERT thoroughly and go through the syllabus line by line, instead of focusing on coaching notes or crash courses. Practise chapter-based textbook exercises every time after you finish a chapter. For Physical Chemistry, create a compact formula and derivation sheet. For Inorganic Chemistry, maintain a notebook covering unusual trends, compounds, colours, oxidation states, structures, and important reactions.
The goal here should be to understand each topic thoroughly before you move on to the next one. For a better conceptual understanding, you can always take help from reference books like O.P. Tandon, Peter Atkins, Morrison & Boyd, or watch a short video on that topic.
Once you build a strong foundation & conceptual understanding, move beyond NCERT exercises to advanced problems that require multiple concepts in a single problem. Prioritise Organic Chemistry mechanisms, Physical Chemistry equilibrium and thermodynamics, and advanced inorganic concepts such as coordination chemistry and bonding.
Your final phase of NSEC preparation must focus on practising & solving real NSEC papers under similar time constraints. Every day, solve 1 previous year’s paper and take 1 mock test. After every test, classify your mistakes into four categories: conceptual gap, calculation error, misreading, and guessing/decision error, and revise those topics accordingly. Solve the same PYQ & Mock 3 days later to track your improvements and build an unbreakable NSEC preparation.
Prioritise Thermodynamics, Ionic Equilibrium, Chemical Kinetics, and Electrochemistry. Focus on learning where equations come from, multi-step numerical problems, reagent behaviour, and practising numerical problems.
Build your preparation around GOC, stereochemistry, and reaction mechanisms. Understand electron movement, curved-arrow mechanisms, electrophile and nucleophile behaviour, acidity/basicity, intermediates, and stereochemical consequences. Instead of memorising dozens of reactions independently, organise them around reaction principles. This way, it will be easier to remember and retain for a long period.
Even though Inorganic Chemistry revolves around memory retention, NSEC preparation requires much deeper application knowledge beyond NCERT knowledge. Prioritise Chemical Bonding, Coordination Compounds, and Qualitative Analysis, along with periodic trends and important inorganic reactions. For deeper preparation, explore concepts such as Crystal Field Theory and Molecular Orbital Theory.
Starting your NSEC preparation just after your Class 10th boards gives you a head start over your competition. Since students already take a long gap after finishing their boards, you can utilise this time to learn Chemistry concepts without having to think about school classes or exams.
Revision is the key. You have to strategise weekly & monthly revisions in your NSEC study plan. And every time you take a mock test & or solve a previous year’s paper, immediately follow it up with a proper revision targeting the topics or chapters you got the most wrong answers on.
Previous years’ question papers and mock tests play a crucial role in the preparation for any competitive exam, including NCES. Develop a habit of solving 5-6 PYQs & Mocks within a 2-hour time slot, respectively, and analyse your mistakes thoroughly.
Time management can be improved through consistent practice under limited or shorter time constraints. Set a rule for yourself to skip a question after 30 seconds if you don’t understand it, and not to spend more than a minute solving a single question when taking mock tests.
Being dedicated to your exam preparation is fine, but it should not cost you your mental health or drain all of your energy. Dedicate a fixed time slot for study sessions, and in your free time, do some exercise, meditate, meet your friends, and get 7 to 8 hours of proper sleep.

Many students stop midway, fearing NSEC preparation will interfere with their boards or entrance competitive examinations like JEE or NEET. But they forget the fact that the official NSEC syllabus is broadly equivalent to senior-secondary Chemistry up to Class 12 CBSE.
