NSEB stands for National Standard Examination in Biology and serves as the gateway to the Indian National Biology Olympiad and its subsequent stages, including Orientation Cum Selection Camp (OCSC) & International Biology Olympiad (IBO).
IAPT conducts and manages national coordination & administrations of NSEB, while HBCSE works as the nodal agency for the broader national Olympiad programme. For the Biology Olympiad, ATBS handles the academic responsibility at the NSE stage. The NSEB Olympiad is targeted for students studying in Classes 10, 11, & 12 to test their Biology concepts. Students appearing for this exam are divided into groups depending on their current standard: Group A (Class 12 students) & Group B (Class 11 or lower). Every year, approximately 300 students qualify for INBO, and even fewer in the subsequent stages.

The official HBCSE NSEB syllabus states that it is broadly equivalent to the senior-secondary level up to and including Class 12 CBSE Biology. But broadly equivalent does not mean only preparing for NCERT-based school-level questions. The NSEB exam is designed to assess conceptual understanding and the ability to apply knowledge to unfamiliar problems, meaning your preparation should be focused on building structure, function, classification, and evolution.
